Ireland Day 3 - Belfast

Northern Ireland's capital

For some time now Belfast has been trying to throw off its old "city of strife" image and re-invent itself as a major tourist centre. Unfortunately for us, we happened to visit the city on the day that the worst violence for 20 years broke out.

However the police (and later the army) were much in evidence, making sure the riots didn't get to the city centre area, and we managed to get a few pictures.

Belfast Building
One of the more impressive-looking buildings in Belfast

Belfast Building
Another mock-castle style building that caught Althea's eye

Belfast City Hall
The City Hall is a genuinely impressive building

Sculpture of woman with hoop
An interesting sculpture that's been erected in the newly-redeveloped dockside area

A Belfast church
Can't remember which church this was, offhand

I think neither of us were over-impressed with Belfast -- but then one of the problems with living in London is that you can't help comparing any other city you visit with London.
